Another round of high key lighting.

Joshua Hubbell January 13, 2021

White backgrounds again! This is something every studio photographer or any photographer working with 2 or more lights should know how to pull off as it is very versatile in use, and fortunately there are lots of ways to pull this off. Lots of photography studios have a white background, however I assure you even the most expensive ones with top-of-the-line gear do not have a perfect white background – there are scruffs, dust, and specks all of which are easy to overcome.

This time around, I had two speed lights off to the side aimed at the white sheet background set high to blow out the whites and thus overpower all the wrinkles out of the picture. Meanwhile, up front I had a single strobe aimed at an umbrella. Normally I use a softbox with a grid to control the light, but for this sort of session I want the light to all over to help blow out those backgrounds.

As for my assistant, she set up the wardrobe herself. She showed up with a focus on her phone, so we played around with that for a while and then we just went through a few poses. I let her sort of move through different poses on her own as that helps prevent the subject from looking stiff or forced.
