Birthday Photo Session

Joshua Hubbell August 29, 2022

One of my assistants turned 5! So she was excited to a birthday photo session. All the same, I made sure to have a clear idea as to what we were going to do and have everything set up for it ahead of time. To keep her happy, I used our bubble machine for this, but aside from that I just played off her general excitement of turning five.

I did use a strobe; I love using strobes when I can. The thing to keep in mind is that the wind is often stronger than you realize but also depends on what light modifiers you are using. For example, I usually use a softbox outside with my strobes, which basically turns them into sails and that can be dangerous for your gear if that strobe falls over. To prevent this, I recommend a sandbag. You can usually get the bag cover cheap online or you can skip that step and go straight to step two which is fill a gallon bag with sand (I recommend sand from a hardware store to limit what stuff may be in it), seal it, and put it on the leg of the tripod holding your strobe. Just remember this adds a bit of weight to things and depending how you have planned your session you may be carrying it a distance – be sure you can carry it that distance.

Anyway, she had a blast with this photo session is excited for what will come next in her five-year-old world.
