This summer I had the opportunity to photograph promotional images for Compass Rose Theater’s upcoming production of Annie - and one of those photos was even featured in the Capital Gazette and Compass Rose Theater was even generous enough to credit me (they are just always awesome like that!).
From the moment we began the session, I knew this would be a special project. Jules Kanarek, who plays Annie, captured the role with an energy and heart that leapt through the lens. Sequel, the professional performance dog portraying Sandy, worked with the poise of a seasoned performer. And I happen to know that James Toler as Oliver Warbucks is going to be just as impressive on stage. The cast is something truly worth seeing.
Because the theater was under renovation, we worked outside rather than in the usual stage environment. In the end, that constraint became an advantage. Thinking outside the box, I used two strobes with softboxes to shape the light and bring out the best in the performers. The results highlight what I love about theater photography: collaboration, problem-solving, and the joy of capturing talent in motion.
Compass Rose’s entire season looks promising. In addition to Annie, the lineup includes Pride and Prejudice, Rent, and the Compass Rose Cabaret. Season passes are available through September 15, and every Compass Rose show I’ve attended has been outstanding.
For me, this session was a reminder of why I love what I do. Photography isn’t just about lighting and composition - it’s about connection, trust, and helping performers and organizations share their story with the community.
