Single Light Practice

Joshua Hubbell March 15, 2021

Daylight savings time changes are the worst.

Anyway, this weekend we were practicing various basic techniques again. I started with a single rim light. It is a good technique that is easy to accomplish and can be used in a wide variety of photo session types as well as a useful support light setup in a more complicated lighting set up. Once again, a rim light predominantly brings out the outline of your subject plus a little more depending on how much light is bouncing around and how much light you expose in processing. So, in these photos you get the outline plus a little more due to bounce and light exposure.

This time around we utilized a violin. This sort of lighting tends to be dramatic, especially when used with a black background so we sort of went with that. That is also why I processed some of them in grayscale. The best part of this lighting set up is that it is simple. It just requires a single light and a little testing. The effect of this setup can be amplified with a good understanding of your processing tools.
