Smartphones and Hats.

Joshua Hubbell September 21, 2022

Lots of people like to bring their own prop – a smart phone. It isn’t ideal but it is a starting point if need be. Throw in a hat to make it a little more dramatic. If they are being extra serious that day, then the trick is to get them to roll their eyes. Once the eye rolling begins you are close to giggling and laughter and that’s a good end point. I guess that is just a fancy way of saying view each photo session as a journey, not a destination. Even if it is taking place in just one location with just one lighting setup.

For lighting, I used 3 strobes. The key and the filler both had octagon softboxes, one just off to the side and in front of the subject and the other just off to the side.  The third strobe was just a bare strobe directly behind the subject (equal with torso level) and aimed directly at the subject. It was acting as a rim light. I love using rim lighting when the subject has a lot of hair – probably too often.
