That bright rim light.

Joshua Hubbell December 16, 2020

Some more studio light testing. All these photos were done with a naked strobe in back eclipsed by the subjects in some way or another, aka a rim light, and a speedlight with a softbox up front. I have a few bigger sessions later in 2021 so I want to touch up on some of the techniques I might be using for a few of those.

Wherever that rim light is set, that is going to impact how the rim light interacts with the subjects. This isn’t just side to side, it’s also forward and back. Not to mention the power settings. So, if you are going for a look that utilizes this setup, then be sure to test it. Don’t forget your variables. For example, this was done in a garage, but if you plan to employ it outside then consider what outside might impact it – will nearby trees create bounce? Will unwanted plants be visible due to light feathering? Just consider those things. You might need a grid, beauty dish, or even a stripped down softbox to give the light more direction.

As for the front light, that’s more controlled and more direct. At worst, I might have added a grid, but I didn’t need to for this test session.
