Have hands do something.

Joshua Hubbell January 28, 2021

Can’t seem to catch up with this week, so I just will go with Tuesday and Thursday and try to do better next week. My subject needed elegant photos this time for her project. Hopefully, what she is working on pans out for her. She reused some of the stuff from our monster photos the other day and came up with a new outfit. She insisted on a red background.

One side note here, not every photographer lets the model or client pick things out. I try to accommodate requests (like the background) unless I know it will create problems. This way they are more invested the photo session and the more people who want the session to succeed the better in my book. If I cannot accommodate the request I explain why. This stance has not failed me yet, but if it ever does, I’ll let people know.

Once again, do not be afraid to make hands do work in a photo. We look awesome when we have our hands doing stuff. When I am working with a client or a model, I try to have their hands do something. Sometimes it is as simple as holding a prop, but other times it is just have a hand hold an arm or touch their face. Just have them do something. This in turn gets the muscles doing something and makes the whole picture look more fluid.

For this session, we kept it simple – just two lights. One on the side as a fill light and one in front as a key light. Both were strobes with octagon softboxes. Aside from that, a very easy session.
