Tips on setting up a mini-session.

Joshua Hubbell September 2, 2022

Here’s a quick one because it’s really late when I typing up this post. These are photos preparing for a set of mini sessions or in this case 6 sets of 15-minute sessions across two hours. If you did your math correctly that means there are about 30 minutes left over. I like to schedule them every 20-minute mark so that I have 5 minutes to get ready for the next client.

As the first sentence stated, these are a practice run. This took place about 30 minutes before the first client was scheduled. If you have access to assistant, I highly recommend you do a practice run. Think of it as a warmup before a race. It will also help you get a feel for the location and test any permits you have. Remember, most of the time, security at the location you are working will have notice of any permits you have, but if today’s the day you want security to ask for your permit with your assistant as the subject, not your client.

If you are without an assistant, I’d still recommend showing up early. This way you can walk the grounds and evaluate the situation. Most of the time it will be smooth sailing, but again, if today’s the day something is out of the norm, you want to have time to plan a workaround. And if you are at the point where you are scheduling clients, then you better be flexible enough to plan a workaround.

Anyway, for these I had my dance partner (my strobe) with an octogon softbox and a wonderful sandbag to keep the wind from carrying it off to the sky. All in all, the mini-sessions turned out great and I am looking forward to scheduling more next season.
